Is frozen food actually healthy or are all the nutrients destroyed when it gets frozen? Is it even worth the cost?
Here are 4 frozen food facts that will probably surprise you…
Fact #1: Your fresh apple might be 7 in dog years.
In nature, apples are only ripe once a year. But you can find them available year-round in nearly any store.
That year-round availability means that most of the apples at your grocery story have been shipped around the world and/or held in cold storage for months.
Some apples can be up to 14 months old, (or 7 in dog years).
Oh… that explains those dry, mealy apples you sometimes get!
But it doesn’t stop at apples. Other more delicate produce like lettuce, tomatoes, and spinach might already be a few weeks old by the time they hit the shelves.
In contrast, frozen vegetables go from harvest to freezer within 4 short hours. The process of flash-freezing vegetables preserves the field-fresh taste and quality right up until the point you eat them.
Fact #2: Fresh foods– not as healthy as you think?
You would think that at least fresh foods are better than frozen foods when it comes to the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in them.
Sorry to disappoint. Unless you are eating veggies straight from the farm, you aren’t getting what you paid for. Grocery store veggies can lose up to 10-75% of their vitamin C after sitting in storage for just one week!
After languishing in storage facilities, it might take a few more weeks before your fresh food makes it to the grocery store. Every passing day represents more lost nutrients. But those losses don’t stop when you bag it up and check out.
How long does that food spend in your crisper? Right. The clock is still ticking down on those nutrients.
But frozen food can be kept in your freezer much longer before losing as many nutrients.
Fact #3: Your fridge is costing you big bucks.
How many times have you filled your fridge with fresh foods with every intention to make some great meals? Then life got in the way…and a week later you ended up with a bunch of slimy bags of food?
Have you ever added up how much money you spent on each bag of rotten food you tossed in the garbage?
That wasn’t your imagination. Americans throw out more than 25% of the foods they prepare at home.
Naturally, your frozen food will be waiting patiently for you, weeks or months later. So you can have a change of plans, or eat out without wasting a dime.
That could translate to saving 25% or more on your grocery bill.
Fact #4: That steak in your freezer is slowly rotting.
Fresh meats that you buy at the store are already decaying as they sit on the shelf. But what happens when you try to keep them in the freezer for later? Doesn’t that help to preserve them?
Yes, and no. When you put fresh foods in your freezer, they become frozen very slowly– much slower than flash-freezing. This ‘slow-freeze’ creates large ice crystals that don’t do a great job at preserving the food, so your food continues to rot verrry slowly.
What’s worse– those large ice crystals act like tiny knives, puncturing the cell walls of your foods. It’s like your steak is getting chopped up from the inside.
When you thaw your food out, the result is a mushy texture. A good example of this is when you’ve tried to freeze certain fresh fruits or vegetables in your freezer. Most times, you get a runny mess when you thaw them.
How is it that flash frozen vegetables can still be tender-crisp, even after freezing, thawing, and cooking?
First, flash frozen vegetables and meats are processed at their peak, before they have any time for their cells to decay.
And second, the rapid freezing process creates much smaller, more uniform ice crystals, which don’t cut the cell walls.
Intact cell walls means you don’t end up with rotten mush for dinner.

I had several family meals for special occasions…….went astray, but now I am back on the plan. We were also out of town. THESE frozen foods are great for the fiber.

I think there’s a tendency to assume anything frozen, packaged, or canned has to be bad for you these days. But your post has validated my thoughts that frozen food can actually be better than the ‘fresh’ produce from the grocery aisle.. now time for some frozen chicken risotto with frozen spinach (the rice wasn’t frozen don’t worry!).

Hi Carly,
Thank you for the comment! You are absolutely correct about people’s perceptions of food.
We find it interesting how people will worry more about micro-details such as the health benefits of frozen broccoli than the big picture benefit of losing 20-100 pounds.
I hope you enjoyed your meal, I’m sure it was fantastic! (:

I have ordered Personal Trainer food many, many times. I would like to suggest that you begin to offer more selections in the way of meats. I love all the veggies.
Janis Hauser says
Hi Callie!
Great feedback, and I totally agree we need more meats. It’s a good thing Nikki in the warehouse is on the case, because it looks like she read your mind? Have you seen the four new meat items on our menu yet?
These just went live this week:
Peppered Chicken
Smoked BBQ Pork Ribs
Works Burger
Santa Fe Veggie Burger
I’ve tried them all– pretty tasty if you ask me. (:

I use the personal trainer food for the purpose of healthy eating. My husband and I have been customers for a couple of years. The first year my husband lost 4o lbs. I lost 6.. I’m not overweight, but, because of health reasons, it’s difficult to stand at the stove and prepare a meal of the quality and difficulty that I did as a younger adult cooking for my family. We are in our 70’s…still look good and refuse to let age determine our place in the older community. With your food, I feel that my husband and I eat healthier than we would if we didn’t partake.. We don’t eat the food exclusively, but, 3/4 ‘s of the time. It works for us and we will continue to be a part of the “Personal Trainer Food” family. My 4 year old granddaughter loves the chicken sticks and the carrots in the mixed vegetables. Several members of my family are also participants in the food program, and, the other convenient aspect of the food, is, it is always available to feed those family members when they are visiting and want to stay within the parameters of the program. (FYI) This is the only public endorsement of a product that I have ever used, and we’re covering decades of consumerism. So,, take it to heart! You’re providing a worthy service to those of us that just want to eat healthy food…

Frozen seafood is also a great choice for a healthy meal. In China, people use to consume a lot of healthy frozen seafood as a source to be fit and strong.
Janis Hauser says
Yes, Xu! We love frozen seafood too. It’s unlimited on our meal plan– any kind of seafood, fresh or frozen. Enjoy in health!
Nicole says
I love that the food is SO tasty!
I had a question on the longevity of it’s freshness from when I receive it and use it.
How long can it stay frozen?
I’ve had a hamburger in there for over 4 months and I’m not sure it’s still good?
Please let me know how long each item can stay in the freezer.
Thanks!
Janis Hauser says
Glad you are enjoying the food, Nicole!
Our foods keep in your freezer for as long as six months so your hamburger should be good.
